To celebrate International Literacy Day I share with you a picture of one of my South African students working on our class poem ” This Is South Africa”.
I fell in love with reading and writing at a young age and the power of language continues to amaze me. It allowed for 3 Americans , and 9 South African poets and writers to come together and make art.
Literacy bridges cultures and appreciation for the arts. It allows for us to live our daily lives , it is allowing you to read this right now !
Early literacy continues to be an are for improvement in many Latin American countries. USAID reported in 2012 that , “UNESCO tests indicate that more than 1/3 of third graders cannot read at grade level. By the time these students reach the 6th grade, 20% will still be functionally illiterate.”
Today let’s celebrate the spread of literacy world wide but also remember that work is not done .
